Building trust before asking for anything

Weeks of genuine-seeming conversation (sometimes romantic, sometimes purely social) before trading or investing ever comes up - a pattern common enough to have its own name ("pig butchering") in some scam categories, where the relationship itself is the setup.

Manufactured urgency and exclusivity

"Limited spots," a time-limited bonus, or a sense that you've been let into an opportunity others don't have access to - all designed to short-circuit the normal amount of time someone would otherwise take to verify a claim.

Authority and social proof

Fabricated credentials, borrowed or fake testimonials, and staged group enthusiasm (see WhatsApp/Telegram Scams) all serve the same function: making the claim feel independently verified when it isn't.

The general defense

Slow down specifically when you feel pressure to act fast, verify claims through channels you found yourself rather than ones provided to you, and treat an unusually fast-building relationship that leads to a financial ask as reason for extra scrutiny, not less.
